PHP RCE Alert | Seller Site Patch Plan Before Oct 21
- Affects PHP 8.1 and older stores, plugins and hosting; 884,000 internet-facing hosts flagged via Shodan banners

Overview
The news reports that PHP will ship an out-of-cycle security release at 14:00 UTC on October 21, 2025, fixing two critical remote code execution flaws rated 9.2 on CVSS v4.0, after a leak of two CVSS 10.0 flaws affecting PHP 5 onward. For e-commerce operators, this is an urgent infrastructure issue: any storefront, plugin, or hosting stack built on PHP needs an inventory and patch schedule now. Because the advisory names no workaround and no exploitation had been reported at publication, the window between disclosure and attacks may be short.
The exposure is concentrated on sites still running end-of-life PHP branches. According to the report, only the supported branches PHP 8.2 through 8.5 will receive the fix, so sellers on 8.1, 8.0, 7.x or 5.x have no official patch path. Security firm Mallory counted about 884,000 internet-facing hosts reporting PHP 8.1 or older via Shodan banners, though banners do not confirm vulnerability. Industry data shows PHP CGI flaw CVE-2024-4577 drew exploit attempts within 24 hours, so sellers should assume scanning will begin quickly after release. Shared hosting and self-managed VPS operators carry the highest risk, while sellers on Shopify, Amazon, or Walmart marketplaces face indirect exposure only through their own storefronts or integrations.
Migration and isolation are the operational levers. The operational impact depends on platform choice. Sellers running WooCommerce, Magento, or custom PHP storefronts should confirm their hosting panel's PHP version and move to 8.2 or later; PHP 8.4 supports until December 31, 2026 and 8.5 until December 31, 2027, which gives a longer runway for planning. Huntress and CERT-EU advise isolating internet-facing applications until patches land, which can mean restricting admin panels to VPN or IP allowlists and placing a web application firewall in front of checkout and login routes. Sellers with smaller budgets can expect a managed-hosting upgrade or WAF subscription to cost roughly $20-100 per month, far less than a breach involving customer payment data.
Immediate actions (0-7 days). Inventory every PHP runtime, plugin, and theme by October 22, 2025, and confirm the version in hosting control panels. Apply the 8.2+ patch the day it ships and rotate admin, database, and API credentials afterward. Strategic adjustments (1-3 months) include migrating off 8.1 and below, documenting the patch timeline for PCI DSS evidence, and adding WAF monitoring. Risk mitigation: monitor PHP's security announcements, since the release may come earlier if details leak, and avoid delaying patches for sites with seasonal traffic peaks such as Q4 holiday campaigns, when an outage or defacement costs the most in lost orders.
