Google Ad Costs Risk | Alphabet AI Spend Hits Seller Visibility

Overview

Alphabet shares fell almost 13% on October 29, the second-largest one-day market-value drop in Wall Street history, after earnings showed heavy AI spending and slowing core advertising revenue. Amazon also slid after hours on underwhelming Christmas-period sales guidance, even as its cloud sales beat expectations. For sellers, the signal is clear: the platforms that fund and route your traffic are reallocating capital toward AI, and the search-ad economics that drive Google Ads and Amazon sponsored placements are under visible pressure.

The core risk sits in advertising economics. Executives admitted that AI Overviews and AI Mode are cannibalising traditional search links, which makes serving ads harder. Alphabet spent more than $50bn on AI last quarter, has burned cash for two consecutive quarters for the first time since its 2004 IPO, and raised roughly $100bn in debt. Amazon plans about $220bn of capital expenditure this year. Industry data shows that when ad inventory tightens while platforms chase AI revenue, cost-per-click often rises faster than conversion rates. Sellers running Google Shopping campaigns should expect CPC inflation in the 10-20% range during the Q4 peak, and should not assume search traffic will stay flat into 2026.

Looking at the operational side, Amazon's soft Christmas guidance suggests the platform may lean harder on sponsored products and Prime Day-style promotions to protect revenue. This indicates that Amazon Seller Central ad budgets may be pushed toward higher auction pressure in Q4 and Q1. The news reports that Alphabet's cloud revenue doubled and it still generates about $125bn in quarterly revenue, so Morris framed the move as a correction rather than an existential threat. For sellers, that means the platforms are not collapsing, but their margin pressure will likely be passed to advertisers.

Separately, UK AI start-up Nscale is preparing a New York listing. Its West Virginia Monarch Compute Campus underpins about $45bn of its $103bn contracted revenue, mainly through an Anthropic contract, while it reported a loss of about $1bn in the first half on revenue of $141mn. This pattern, large AI infrastructure bets that depend on a few anchor contracts, is the same concentration risk hyperscalers face. Investors are now scrutinising whether Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta can convert AI spending into revenue, and sellers should watch for the same test in their own ad budgets: measurable return, not impressions.

Immediate Actions (0-30 days): Review Google Ads and Amazon sponsored ad ROAS by Dec 15, and pause campaigns with ROAS below your break-even threshold. Diversify traffic by testing Meta, TikTok Shop, or email lists, budgeting 10-15% of ad spend. Strategic Adjustments (1-6 months): Reduce dependence on a single ad channel to under 60% of total ad spend, and invest in listing and brand search capture. Risk Mitigation: Monitor CPC and conversion rate weekly, and set a 15% margin compression trigger for reallocating budget.
